Purpose: to analyze the application of the “International Classification of Functioning, Limitations of Life Limitations and Health for Children and Adolescents” (ICF-CA) in the implementation of early intervention programs for children with movement disorders.
Materials and Methods. To achieve the goal of the research, a content analysis of literary sources and documents was carried out, and a systematic approach to information analysis was also used.
Results. The algorithm for providing an early intervention service involves a sequence of stages: identifying children with developmental disabilities, building an individual early intervention program, implementing this program and evaluating its effectiveness, leaving the early intervention service and transferring to other programs or institutions. At all these stages, the ICF is used. Early intervention technology is based on the International Classification of Functioning, Life Limitations and Health for Children and Adolescents and implements the biopsychosocial model of care. The guiding principles of early intervention are family-centeredness, functionality, teamwork and interdisciplinarity, as well as the principle of implementing early intervention programs in the natural environment using everyday routines. ICF tools have been developed for use at different stages of the rehabilitation cycle. Existing core sets combined with the use of ICF qualifiers were the basis for this development. ICF tools support a common understanding of functioning and communication among team members when used in multidisciplinary rehabilitation.
Conclusions. Organization of an early intervention service using the ICF-CA allows practical implementation of the modern principles of the biopsychosocial model of providing care. The assessment of functioning is focused on the patient and on determining the goal of rehabilitation and is the starting point of the rehabilitation process.
