Purpose: analysis of the birth rate, total fertility rate, and infant mortality, including in the neonatal period in Ukraine and the Lviv region, as a platform for comparing changes in the country as a whole and its region and the basis for strategic planning medical care for pregnant women, mothers and newborns.
Materials and Methods. The study was based on data from the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine among the population of Ukraine and the Lviv region for 2018–2020, namely medical and demographic indicators: fertility and total fertility rate, infant mortality, including at the age of 0–27 days. The following methods were used: demographic, medical statistics, statistical comparisons, and generalizations.
Results. The regional peculiarities of the studied indicators have been established, namely in Lviv oblast: higher birth rate and lower degree of reduction of the general birth rate and childbirth intensity, at the same time with more pronounced “shift” of birth rate towards “aging”; increase in the mortality rate of children under 1 year of age with exceeding the average Ukrainian level and a higher share of mortality due to certain conditions that occur in the perinatal period; increase in infant mortality due to “Congenital malformations, deformities, and chromosomal abnormalities”, in Ukraine it decreased; a significant increase in infant mortality from “Some infectious and parasitic diseases”, especially among boys. The change in infant mortality in the neonatal period in Ukraine and Lviv region in 2018–2020 showed opposite trends: in Ukraine, at lower rates, it increased, and in the Lviv region - it decreased.
Conclusion. The strategy to improve neonatal care for the population of Ukraine should be based on regional specifics and address issues that are somehow related to demographic processes (births, deaths, migration) and socio-economic (especially living conditions, including stress and deteriorating health). problems in childbirth, the organization of medical care for newborns and infants, including the work of centers of expert and regional neonatal screening).
