Purpose: to substantiate the use of dental indices to determine the need for orthodontic treatment of children and adolescents, assess the feasibility of correcting jaw and dental anomalies, as part of a set of preventive and curative measures aimed at improving the quality of medical care to the population of Ukraine.
Materials and Methods. Both clinical and analytical research methods have been used. A systematic approach as a basic background of the study has been used. At the first stage there were: clinical (dental examination, X-ray, teleradiography); socio-psychological. In the second stage: analysis of the use of a number of dental indices. Mathematical and statistical methods to determine the reliability of the results, analytical and synthetic to analyze the data and compare them with the results of other authors have been used
Results. Clinical examination of 2260 adolescents aged 14–17 years in Uzhhorod made it possible to select a group of 1474 people with jaw and dental anomalies, which is 65 % of the total number of subjects. Analysis of the data showed a high frequency of anomalies: the predominance of distal occlusion ‒52.6 %, deep – 10.5 % – 17.6 %, oblique – 15.7 % – 23.7 %, mesial – 7.6 % – 12 %, open – 2 % – 14.5 %. The use of dental indices DAI, IOTN, ICON showed a lack of awareness of some patients in the presence of clinical forms of jaw and dental anomalies, clear ideas about the need and outcome of treatment, low motivation to follow medical care.
Conclusion. It has been stated that the ICON index is a universal and effective screening tool for assessing the state of occlusion both at the clinical stage and in epidemiological surveys, as it is the most effective and simple in terms of clinical application and allows the patient’s expectations closer to orthodontic treatment.
