Purpose: to determine the main medical and demographic problems of Ukraine, which are to be resolved in the framework of the country’s public health system.
Materials and Methods. Source: data of state and industry statistical reporting and operational data of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on the medical and demographic situation in the country. The statistical method and the method of structural logical analysis are used.
Results. The demographic situation in Ukraine is characterized by a decrease in the birth rate for the period 2014–2019 by 19.4 % with an excess of the mortality rate by 6.16 per 100 thousand people. Moreover, the proportion of deaths of men of working age in the total number of deaths is 20.3 %. The part of the rural population tends to decrease and amounts to 30.99 % in its total number. There are high levels of reported cases of disease prevalence, both among all and among the child population. There is a tendency towards a decrease in these indicators; it is a factor in the decrease in the population overrun in public health institutions. A sharp deterioration in the epidemiological situation in the country and high levels of self-destructive behavior of the population have been established. Moreover, the majority of the population is irresponsible to personal health.
Conclusions. A difficult medical and demographic situation is being recorded in Ukraine, which requires a comprehensive, targeted and effective action from the public health system aimed at reducing the mortality rate of children and people of working age, prevention, early detection and effective treatment of noncommunicable diseases, epidemics of vaccine-preventable infections, ensuring access of the population to health-saving technologies and the formation of the population’s prestige of personal health and responsible attitude to it.
