Abstract

Introduction. Arthritis is one of the most common inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system, leading to persistent disorders of motor activity and disability of the population. According to statistics, about 1–2 % of the adult population of the world suffers from various forms of arthritis, and in the structure of rheumatological pathology they occupy one of the leading places. Lesions of the large joints of the lower extremities – ankle, knee and hip – are of particular clinical and social importance, since it is these joints that provide support, walking, balance and movement. Pathological changes in them sharply reduce functional independence, limit working capacity and significantly worsen the quality of life of patients. That is why physical therapy is of great importance, which is aimed at reducing pain syndrome, improving joint mobility, strengthening muscles, correcting motor stereotypes and restoring patients’ functional ability by massage and manual therapy methods.

The aim of the study – to investigate the effectiveness of using a comprehensive approach of massage and manual therapy in restoring the functions of the ankle, knee and hip joints, as well as to substantiate the feasibility of combining them in the rehabilitation process.

The main part. The study was conducted at the private rehabilitation center «SUNRISE» in Ternopil. The study involved 30 patients diagnosed with arthritis of the large joints of the lower extremities (ankle, knee, and hip). The program lasted 8 weeks. As a result of the study, it was found that the proposed physical rehabilitation program, which included the course application of massage and manual therapy, had a positive effect on the functional state, level of physical activity, balance, mobility and quality of life in patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

Conclusions. Thus, the study showed that the use of rehabilitation massage and manual therapy contributes to the comprehensive recovery of patients with arthritis of large joints of the lower extremities: reducing pain, increasing functional activity, improving endurance, mobility and expanding the amplitude of movements. This emphasizes the feasibility of using the developed technique in the clinical practice of rehabilitation centers and its prospects for further dissemination.
