Abstract

The work of nurses in palliative care units and hospices, where terminal care is provided, is crucial to improving the quality of life of patients in need. This activity is aimed at alleviating physical and psychological stress and ensuring a dignified death. A nurse in this field is crucial in helping patients by providing them with medical care, skilled care, and psychological support. This helps to reduce suffering and improve the quality of life. This professional level requires deep medical knowledge, strong compassion, empathy and spiritual development.

The aim of the work – to create an “ideal” psychological portrait based on the identification and comparison of subjective assessments of incurable patients and medical professionals of the nurse’s personal traits to predict her professional readiness in providing palliative care.

The main part. The study used a cross-sectional strategy in a non-randomized sample of two respondent groups. The first group included specialists, particularly those with higher medical education and nurses aged 19 to 54. The second group included incurable patients in palliative care, hospices, and senior departments. The study was conducted by the Medical College and medical institutions of Chernivtsi and the Chernivtsi region (Ukraine). The research used semantic differential and mathematical statistics methods. The semantic differential method was chosen to measure respondents’ reactions to an object because it is an effective and common way of averaging a group of responses to an object.

Conclusions. In patients’ subjective perceptions, the “ideal” medical nurse is primarily represented by personal traits, which are described by the types “routine”, “specialist”, and “mother”.
